FUN THINGS TO DO AT HOME

  • MAKE HALLOWEEN COSTUMES

Sure, you could elbow your way through a costume store- or you could whip up an easy, homemade Halloween costume without leaving the house.

  • COLLECT FALL LEAVES AND PRESS OR PRESERVE THEM

Whenever you come across a particularly stunning leaf on the ground, bring it home to turn it into a beautiful DIY project.

  • CARVE (OR PAINT) PUMPKINS

Thanks to the promise of Halloween coming in a few weeks, pumpkin carving is a classic October activity to do at home.

  • MAKE PUMPKIN PUREE

Canned Pumpkin has it's merits, but it's not always made from pure pumpkin. This way you can ensure yours is, plus, it's a great way to use up those pumpkin innards from carving.

  • BASICALLY MAKE PUMPKIN ANYTHING

Bake pumpkin bread or muffins, try pumpkin pancakes, toast pumpkin seeds, make pumpkin lasagna, or make a batch of pumpkin-based soup- just to name a few.

  • WATCH SCARY MOVIES

'Tis the season for scary movies!

  • READ A SCARY BOOK

Curl up on the couch with a blanket and a cup of tea (or maybe something stronger) and lost yourself in the chilling thriller you can't put down.

FUN THINGS TO DO OUTDOORS

  • GO APPLE PICKING

Peak apple picking usually starts in August and continues to peak through September- but there's still time to squeeze in one last trip to a nerby apple orchard or apple farm during the first half of October.

  • CHECK OUT FALL FOLIAGE

Whether it's right at a local park or a two-hour drive into the country, look up the best places to see all the gorgeous, vibrant fall foliage

  • GO PUMPKIN PICKING

Head to a pumpkin patch with your best friends, your kids, or your S.P. to find the perfect pumpkins for an October-themed doorstep or natural fall decor inside.

  • HIKE

Whether it's flat and leisurely or long and rigorous, there's nothing like a good hike through nature surrounded by cool, clean air and fall-touched trees.

  • TAKE A BIKE RIDE

Make a day of it: rent bikes, take the train (or rent a car) out of the city, and ride on local roads.

  • TOUR A HAUNTED HOUSE

Get some friends, find a haunted house nerby and go nuts.

  • GO TO A FALL FESTIVAL

Look into local fall festivals coming up near you and take some friends, your kids, or a date out for a day of hayrides, pumpkin picking, haunted houses, local food stalls, outdoor entertainment and caramel apples.

  • TOUR A WINERY OR BREWERY

A winery or brewery likely won't be quite as crowded in October, plus most places have indoor seating in case the weather's chilly. Otherwise, it's the perfect excuse to wear your cutest fall scarf and ankle boots and enjoy some fresh, local wine and beer with buddies.

MUMMY POPS

Ingredients

  • 8 Straws or lollipop sticks
  • 11oz. chocolate, melted
  • 8 Nutter Butters, opened
  • 1c. buttercream frosting (homemade or store bought)
  • M&M's Minis, for decorating

Directions

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lightly dip straws or lollipop sticks into chocolate before topping on open Nutter Butter. Press cookie back together, then dip into melted chocolate until completely coated. (Allow excess chocolate to drip back into pan.)
  2. Place dipped cookie onto prepared baking sheet to set, about 25 minutes (to speed up the process, transfer pops to drip back into pan.)
  3. Fill a pastry bag fitted with a straight flat tip with buttercream and pipe from side to side. Fill another bag with chocolate, lightly cover backside of M&M's minis, and press onto cookie pops. Dot each M&M with chocoalte to finish eyes.
  4. Set aside at least 1 hour to fully set.

BLACK MAGIC SANGRIA

This black magic drink is a purple punch mixed with blackberries, black grapes, and black plums. Can be made tart (like a witch!) or spellbindingly sweet.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup blackberries
  • 1 cup black grapes, sliced in half
  • 2 medium black plums, sliced into wedges
  • 2 cup cran-grape juice
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • 1/3 cup raspberry liqueur
  • 750 ml red wine, Rose' or Pinot Noir
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar, optional, to taste

Direction

  1. In a large pitcher, add blackberries, black grapes, black plums, cran-grape juice, brandy, raspberry liqueur and red wine.
  2. Stir ingredients together and do a quick taste test. Depending on the type of wine you used, you might want to add 1-2 tablespoons of powdered sugar to sweeten the taste.
  3. Let sangria chill in the refrigerator at least 2 hours before serving. If using a Pinot Noir, chill for at least 4 hours.
